Breast Augmentation (Breast Enhancement ) Surgery

Appreciation of the beauty and mystery of the female breast crosses both time and culture. The first reports at attempts at surgical breast enhancement comes from Japan where following the Second World War, Japanese prostitutes had their breasts injected with paraffin or non-medical grade silicone in order to attract American servicemen stationed on that island nation. The actual first silicone breast implant devices were developed by two American plastic surgeons from Texas: Drs. Frank Gerow and Thomas Cronin. Following that breakthrough development, breast augmentation surgery has become an accepted cosmetic surgical procedure worldwide. In the United States a controversy arose in the 1990s regarding the safety of breast implant devices and after more than a decade of research and legal debate that issue has now been laid to rest; and breast implants of both types, either salt water (saline) or silicone gel filled have been released onto the open market by the United States Federal Government (FDA).

Dr. Jellinek has been performing breast augmentation surgery since 1978. Breast implantation has persisted as one of the more common surgical procedures performed by Dr. Jellinek and in fact by plastic surgeons in general.

In summary, this operation involves making an incision on or near each breast and then creating a surgical space or “pocket” into which the breast implant device is placed. As there are many variations as to the actual incision sites, the position into which the implant devices are placed, and the specific type and size of the implant devices to be selected; that discussion is best left to the doctor/prospective patient consultation.

At Tahoe Plastic Surgery we feel that by the time that the consultative process is concluded that the prospective patient will have enough information to allow her to come to an intelligent decision as to whether this type of operation is applicable to her best interests, and if so; exactly how she wants to proceed.
