Aesthetic Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
One of the earliest physical signs of human maturity are the changes seen in the eyelids. In youth, the eyelids seem crisp and tight. There is a defined crease above the eye and no “puffiness” in the lower eyelids. As we mature, and with the cumulative effect of exposure to the elements and sunlight; all of this combined with inborn hereditary factors, the skin of the eyelids loosens and folds upon itself; and fatty tissues normally found as padding around the eyeball tends to fall forward creating the bulges or “bags” so noticeable with progressive aging.
While we cannot stop this process, cosmetic eyelid or blepharoplasty surgery can in many instances restore a more youthful appearance.
Dr. Jellinek’s technique for cosmetic blepharoplasty has evolved over decades of experience and is done on an outpatient basis using a combination of local anesthesia and intravenous sedation. Using this anesthesia technique that Dr. Jellinek has developed over the course of his practice, most patients do not recall even coming to surgery, let alone having any recollection of the surgery itself!
Surgical incisions are made in the natural appearing creases located above the eyes and adjacent to the eyelashes in the lower eyelids. Working through these incisions, the excessive fatty tissue is removed along with any excessive or lax skin and the wounds are meticulously repaired. While all of Dr. Jellinek’s patients go home with post-operative pain medicine, the doctor’s experience has been that very few patients require any pain medicine whatsoever!
Some bruising can be expected during recovery and Dr. Jellinek suggests that patients refrain from exertional or athletic activities for two to three weeks following eyelid surgery. Sutures placed during surgery are removed towards the end of the first week following surgery.
